Fun Things to Do in Western New York

Western New York blends the energy of urban experiences and the comforting beauty of the natural surroundings just miles beyond the city’s outskirts. Buffalo is at the hub of the region, but Niagara Falls and the surrounding areas of Erie County provide perfect balance. Forbes Capretto Homes has been building homes here for nearly two decades. We know the area and why it’s a great place to live. Here are some fun things to do in Western New York that enhance this lifestyle.

The Erie County Fair comes to The Fairgrounds in Hamburg for 12 days in August. As the largest independent fair, this one blends everything you could want—rides, fair food, competitions, attractions, and excellent entertainment. The annual extravaganza runs from August 8-19. Click here for a daily schedule to plan your visit.

Where else can you get your fill of the best buffalo wings than in Buffalo? The 17th annual Buffalo Wing Festival takes place over Labor Day Weekend, September 1 and 2. The schedule includes a Hot Wing Eating Contest, U.S. Wing Eating Championship, Amateur Sauce-Off (in both Creative and Traditional categories), Bobbing for Wings, 5K race, and much more. The Buffalo Wing Festival welcomed more than 51,000 attendees last year and has raised $345,000 for local charities since it began in 2002.

Niagara Falls is, of course, a sought-after destination, but be sure to include the Cave of the Winds trip on your visit. This must-see natural wonder provides an awe-inspiring view of the falls. At the corner of Goat Island, you’ll take an elevator 175 feet down into the Niagara Gorge. Cover yourself with a waterproof poncho and head over the Hurricane Deck, which brings you within 20 feet of the rushing waters of Bridal Veil Falls.

While you’re in the area, visit Old Fort Niagara, a fortress built by the French more than 300 years ago. Initially, the French battled the Iroquois. Then the British captured the fort from the French. The Pontiac Uprising was fought between the British army and the Great Lakes tribes. This fortress has a deep history of battle, through the French and Indian War, Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and Civil War—presenting a fascinating look into the early years of this country.

Artpark is one of the places that could become your local favorite. Situated on 150 acres in Lewiston, this scenic destination features a highly acclaimed collection of outdoor works of art, providing an opportunity for a fascinating walk through the park. Artpark also presents live concerts and theatrical productions in the amphitheater and offers themed camps, weekend family programs, hiking trails, fishing docks, and picnic spots.

Escape rooms are rapidly growing in popularity, and there’s no lack of locations in Western New York to participate in the team effort to solve the puzzles and escape from a locked room. The Great Escape Room in Buffalo combines the puzzling dilemma with a scavenger hunt to escape from rooms like Sherlock Holmes’ Library and The President’s Bunker. Enigma Escape Rooms present challenges like being a CIA Operative during the Cold War or solving the mystery of a billionaire art collector’s lost fortune. The Queen City Escape Room serves up adventures for all ages and ability levels.
