Life on Grand Island, NY

Grand Island, NY is a small town surrounded by the Niagara River, just 12 miles north of Buffalo. The Canadian border sits across the river from Grand Island on the west side, adding even more interest to living here.

The Grand Island population of about 21,300 people is spread across 28 square miles. The town is connected to the mainland by I-190, which runs north to south across the island. Getting back and forth, as well as around the island, is quick and easy.

Being an island, of course, a lot of the activity centers on the Niagara River and shoreline. Buckhorn Island State Park, a short drive from Sandywood Circle, is a popular destination here. The 895-acre nature preserve sits at the northernmost edge of Grand Island, and visitors can enjoy hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, cross country skiing, birdwatching, and fishing.

On the southeastern edge of Buckhorn Island, the Woods Creek Kayak Launch is the perfect place to begin and end your river experience. Woods Creek is slow-moving, guiding you gently to the Niagara River. When you live at Sandywood Circle, you can have your boat in the water minutes after leaving your home.

If you’re looking for a different kind of outdoor experience, head south from your home to Niagara Amusement Park and Splash World. The park offers a variety of diversions and it’s so close that you can go for a break to cool off in the Lazy River or spend a full day taking in all the action. Live entertainment, rides—from kiddie-safe to thrill-seeking—and all the wet and wild activity at the water park serve up a welcome escape.

No matter how long you live on Grand Island, a cruise up the Erie Canal and Niagara River is a relaxing, enjoyable way to spend a day or evening. Niagara River Cruises features a wide variety of theme-based trips, including Buffalo Bills Tailgate, Independence Day Fireworks, Poker Run, and music, comedy, and history cruises.

Grand Island also maintains a large network of parks on the island. Just up the road from Sandywood Circle, Havenwood Park is known for its active pickleball community. The sport has soared in popularity, and having courts near your new construction home is a great way to meet more neighbors. Havenwood Park also boasts  hockey roller rink, tennis courts, and a playground—something for all your active family members.

Is a day on the links the way you like to spend your leisure time? You’ll find a challenging course at River Oaks Golf Club in Grand Island. The second hole on this course is ranked one of the toughest in Western New York!
